Biography Of Nyangamoki

Late Mrs Claris Nkechinyere Anyanwu was born about 80 years ago into the family of Mr and Mrs Keke Onyechere of Umudiwehe- Umuchie in Abueke Eluama Community of Ihitte/Uboma L.G.A, Imo State.

She was the third daughter amongst four female children born by her mother into the family.

Due to her family financial incapability then, Mama had no opportunity to attend Western Education though she was too smart and highly intelligent. A close conversation with her one on one will attest to this fact.

As a teenager till she got married, Nkechinyere was hard working and dedicated to her family needs. She got involved in several chores as long as there will be food for the family at the end of the day.

Mama would gather vegetables of several kinds, follow her peers to the bush to pick African Oil Bean (Ugba), crack palm kernel and other menial jobs and finally trek to Ekeoha and Umuahia environ to sell them in order to make few penny. Thus she sacrificed a lot for her father’s house.

Due to her hard working charisma, she was attracted to her husband who without delay, seek her hand in marriage.

In the year 1958, Daa Nkechi got married to her very ebullient and resourceful husband Mr Alphonsus Chikezie Anyanwu who hails from Umunwokafor Family in Umudurodu Umuoma-Uboma and was also a small scale farmer in Cameroon before the marriage.

In order to maintain a solid relationship as husband and wife, mama followed her husband to Cameroon.

When both went to Cameroon, there was nothing to show as her husband was a beginner. Mama tightened her knob and joined her husband in carrying out jobs like weeding, grass cutting (chafia) , luggage bearer etc. It is very clear mama was a shining sun that brought great fortune into her husband’s life and the entire family. “Di m ngw’anyi zode ukwu n’ala” was her popular say in order to push harder and gather more.

Her labour was not in vain as God looked down upon her in mercy and blessed the family indeed.

One indisputable fact about Nkechi is that she can’t be happy enjoying God’s blessing alone. She remembered her father’s compound and extended her cheerful nature to her brothers. Umuchie can attest to this.

While she was still agile in Cameroon, mama was the women leader for many years. Her word is a command and there is undoubtedly all sincerity in her judgement. She never had problem with any woman both to fellow Igbo’s or Cameroonian. Nkechi was peaceful, loving, truthful and kind to all. With her there is no iota of segregation in the family and even externally.

As said earlier, if she had the opportunity to be educated, the sky would have been her starting point. But she never was a failure. Educated or not, she believe one can still be what God had ordained.

Mama served as a mid-wife in Cameroun, assisting almost all the pregnant women in the area to put to bed sound and safely. She got award for this free services and that was why Cameroonians gladly gave her the popular name “Nyangamoki”, meaning Great Mother.

Today, I want to state it categorically that Mma Nk’ukwu was an epitome of success and God sent to her generation.

It is with great joy that Nkechi’s last days was the greatest of all. She had the opportunity to confess Jesus Christ as her Lord and Personal Saviour till she took the last breath.

She had fought a good fight, she had finished the race, and we believe a Crown of righteousness is awaiting her.

Go in peace Nyangamoki. Until we meet to part no more on that resurrection morning.
